Understanding Pey-Berland Tower
• A cathedral bell tower.
Pey-Berland Tower is the free-standing bell tower of the Saint André
Cathedral. It was built so as to be able to provide the cathedral with
larger bells, whose vibrations would have endangered the building. A
great bell weighing eight tonnes, called Ferdinand-André, was installed
in 1869.
• The origin of its name. The
building is named after Archbishop Pey-Berland (circa 1370-1458) who
commissioned the tower, and who was a moving force behind the renewal
of the Church in Aquitaine, which was controlled by the Plantagenets at
the time.

What net surfers think about this
